Mural artist, graphics, editorial design.
Inspired by the history of rapid reconstruction and demolition in New York City; Brooklyn based artist Aaron Asis created an immersive exhibit dedicated to the historical landmark “Ulmer Conveyance: William Ulmer’s Brewery” to share the seldom seen interior, contemporary artwork, and lesser-known historical facts about the brewery with the general public and neighboring community.
The artist afforded graphic designer Rebecca Rajgopaul the opportunity to create a mural commemorating the illustrious history of the distillery, one of the pioneering establishments of the late 1800s—now abandoned.
The exhibit “has a profound ability to change the way we see ourselves in the world—creating this new work for the public is a wonderful way to share the past, present, and the future of a rarely experienced piece of New York City’s history.”
During the exploration of the building, various elements such as cogs, chains, keys, and locks were discovered. It was subsequently decided to center the mural around the motif of cogs, symbolizing the brewery’s historical functions leading up to its current abandonment.
The editorial designs have a clean and dynamic layout—playing with composition and typography to utilize the spreads as posters. The second book “Ulmer Mural” showcases the narrative behind the piece, along with photography of viewers writing letters to Ulmer.
