“The Interlude” trilogy is the most extensive project I have ever worked on. The zine series was born immediately after Covid-19 as everyone tried to redeem a sense of normalcy. I noticed that so many of my peers were just trying to go back to as they were—but unconsciously we all held onto this collective anxiety, confusion, and fear that we might not be able to; I think the entire world felt this way honestly.
Amidst all of these feelings I took upon meditation and started studying psychology and neuroscience to better process what was happening around me; I realized that I needed a space to pause, contemplate, and question myself and my surroundings—and thus “The Interlude” was born.
The Interlude is used as an abstract noun to describe a nebulous space that needs to be consciously activated for pausing, contemplating, and questioning. In a society that increasingly tells us what to do and how we should feel, The Interlude acts as a space for centering oneself, embracing independent-thought, and realizing that you might possibly have all the answers you could ever need.
The zines’ are mixed media pieces composed of newspaper, 90 gsm paper, silver vinyl, and acrylic sheets. The editorial design is innovative; the typography pushes boundaries and gives life to the words, the layout has a sense of spontaneity that engages readers, and the photography is from Rebecca’s archive which allows viewers to garner a sense of her inner world.
The iconography set comprised of ‘tildes’ is introduced in the beginning of each book, and is used as visual symbols throughout the series. The symbols are the sole graphic on the covers of the zines and are also highlighted in the screen-printed apparel to represent The Interlude.
The installation piece utilizes the programming tool Arduino to make the graphic structure rotate—symbolizing the change one actively makes to enter The Interlude.
